Man United escapes FA Cup upset after losing 3-goal lead to Coventry City
Manchester United narrowly escaped the FA Cup semifinal with a win, albeit via penalties. The Manchester club squandered a 3-goal lead to Coventry City, forcing extra time and ultimately penalties.
Scott McTominay opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, followed by Harry Maguire’s header in the 45th minute, and Bruno Fernandes’ goal in the 58th minute, putting Man United seemingly in control.
However, Coventry staged a dramatic comeback, with Elias Simms scoring in the 71st minute, Callum O’Hare in the 79th minute, and Haji Wright converting a penalty in the 95th minute to force extra time.
With no goals scored in extra time, the match went to penalties. Andre Onana’s save on O’Hare’s penalty and Ben Sheaf’s missed penalty allowed Rasmus Hojlund to score the winning penalty, securing a 4-2 shootout victory for Man United.
Manchester United will now face Manchester City in the FA Cup final, a repeat of last year’s contest, which Manchester City won en route to their European treble.
