Shettima urges fairness, transparency at top government retreat

On Monday, April 28, Vice President Kashim Shettima called on members of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to embrace transparency, fairness, and service excellence as they begin their duties. His message came during the 2025 RMAFC retreat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, themed “Understanding the Role of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission and Other Stakeholders/Agencies in Nation Building.”

Speaking through his adviser, Mr. Ibrahim Natagwandu, the Vice President reminded the commissioners that they are responsible for making sure money is shared fairly across the federal, state, and local governments. He also mentioned the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy and increase revenue using better tax systems and expanded opportunities.

“I urge the Members and staff of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to rededicate themselves to the aspirations of the government and the people, by upholding the principles of transparency, equity, and service excellence in the discharge of their duties,” Shettima said.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, also spoke at the event. He asked the Commission to review how oil revenues are calculated—especially the 13% oil derivation funds for oil-producing states.

“We know you are doing well but you can do more because as the goose that lays the golden egg, we should not suffer,” he said.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, praised states for boosting their internally generated revenue (IGR) by strengthening their data systems. He said this move would reduce states’ reliance on federal allocations.

RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Shehu also addressed the attendees, saying the new commissioners had a serious job ahead.

“This appointment is not only a call to service but requires integrity, patriotism and excellence,” he stated.

He revealed several updates, including:

  • A new revenue allocation formula is nearly ready.

  • A fresh salary structure for political and public officers is in the works.

  • The Commission is partnering with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, and the Nigeria Customs Service to verify and reconcile revenue collections.
