Olukoyede urges students to use the internet responsibly and avoid cybercrime
The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has warned students across the country about the negative use of the internet, emphasizing that it can be detrimental if misused.
His remarks were made during a study tour by students of Oloye Comprehensive College, Sabon Lugbe, Abuja, to the EFCC on Tuesday, November 5.
Represented by Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE 1 Tony Orilade, Olukoyede advised students to avoid falling into the trap of internet fraud and corruption. He encouraged them to focus on their studies to achieve their dreams and contribute positively to society.
“The purpose of the EFCC is to fight economic and financial crimes,” Olukoyede said. “Social media and the internet can be a tool for good—use it for research, education, and positive pursuits. Don’t let your friends influence you into the wrong use of these platforms. Some parents even sponsor their children into criminal activities. When faced with such pressure, tell your parents you want to go to university and study instead.”
Olukoyede further stressed that the EFCC is actively monitoring internet fraudsters and that there is no hiding place for criminals. “There is no shortcut to success. Be good ambassadors for the EFCC in your communities, homes, and the country,” he said.
ACE 11 Aisha Mohammed, the Head of the EFCC’s Enlightenment and Re-orientation Unit, also addressed the students, urging them to embrace values of integrity and transparency. She called on the students to be responsible citizens and avoid corruption.
“You are the foot-soldiers and ambassadors of the EFCC,” Mohammed said. “Your behaviour should reflect honesty, integrity, and accountability. Always do the right thing, even when no one is watching. Your faith—whether Christian or Muslim—should guide your actions in all areas of your life.”
Mohammed also reminded the students that they are the future of Nigeria and their voices matter. “Shun all forms of corruption and cybercrime. Spread the message of the fight against corruption wherever you go,” she said.
Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, ASE 1 Ogunjobi Olalekan, explained the dangers of cybercrime, emphasizing that it often stems from greed and a lack of discipline. He advised the students to follow three simple steps to stay safe online: “Stop, Think, and Connect” to avoid cybercrime and online abuse.
During the event, the EFCC presented gifts of mobile phones to Mosimua Prudence and Michael Eneodoh, winners of a Question and Answer session, and named Eteng Divine Chioma as the Commission’s Ambassador.
In her response, Head Girl of Oloye Comprehensive College, Mosimua Prudence, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the fight against corruption. “We are thankful for this opportunity to learn from the EFCC and become part of the solution,” she said.
The EFCC’s outreach to students highlights the importance of instilling values of integrity and social responsibility among Nigeria’s youth, ensuring that they grow up to be accountable and law-abiding citizens in the fight against corruption and cybercrime.
