Canada’s new PM Mark Carney accuses Trump of trying to “own” Canada

In a fiery and defiant victory speech on Monday, April 29, newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused U.S. President Donald Trump of attempting to weaken Canada in order to gain control over its land, resources, and economy.

Speaking in Ottawa following the Liberal Party’s federal election win, Carney didn’t hold back.
“As I’ve been warning for months, America wants our land, our water, our resources, our country… never,” he declared.

Carney warned Canadians that the threat from their southern neighbor was real and not just political rhetoric.
“President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, ever happen,” he said. “But we also must recognize the reality that our world has fundamentally changed.”

Despite the tough talk, Carney said he would still meet with Trump to address the growing tensions.
“When I sit down with President Trump, it will be to discuss the future economic and strategic relationship between two sovereign nations,” he said. “And it will be with full knowledge that we have many other options to build prosperity for all Canadians.”

He framed the moment as part of a broader crisis not of Canada’s making, but promised to “win this trade war with America.”
