NLC calls for laws to eliminate child labour and protect Nigeria’s future
On Monday, November 18, 2024, the Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) called for the creation of stronger laws aimed at completely eradicating child labour in Nigeria.
In a statement, the state NLC chairperson, Mrs. Funmi Sessi, emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for child labour accountable, urging that they be brought to justice. She stated that education is the key to lifting children out of labour and ensuring they have a brighter future, free from exploitation.
Sessi pointed out that the NLC has been actively fighting child labour through advocacy efforts and by reporting such cases to the appropriate authorities, including the Federal Ministry of Labour. However, she stressed that more needed to be done at the legislative level to create lasting change.
“We need a law that protects our children and ensures they have the chance to be educated and grow up in a safe environment,” Sessi said. “Perpetrators of child labour must face severe punishment to serve as a warning to others who might exploit children for work.”
She also called for the Labour Standard Bill to be urgently transmitted to the National Assembly, to speed up the fight against child labour. According to Sessi, this law would not only protect children but would also provide more opportunities for the youth to build better futures.
“The government should also support and empower parents or guardians so they can be gainfully employed and provide for their children’s education,” she added.
Sessi’s appeal underscores the critical need for stronger legislative action to protect vulnerable children and ensure that all children have access to education, instead of being forced into labour.
