New universities coming to Osun and Ekiti states

On Thursday, February 20, 2025, President Bola Tinubu made a big decision to help improve education in Nigeria. He signed two bills that will create new universities in Osun and Ekiti states.
The new schools are the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
“These new universities will help teach students about agriculture, science, and technology, and will also help Nigeria become even better at research and innovation,” said President Tinubu. He explained that these schools will help train professionals who will contribute to the country’s growth and development.
A spokesperson for the president, Bayo Onanuga, said that the goal of these new universities is to give students the skills needed to be successful in agriculture and technology. This will also help Nigeria be more competitive around the world.
Right now, Nigeria has 63 federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities, according to the National Universities Commission (NUC).
This isn’t the first time the president has made important decisions for universities. On February 3, 2025, he approved the creation of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni, Rivers State.
The president has also agreed to take over a private university in Southern Kaduna, turning it into a federal university to help more students get a good education.
