APC blames Atiku for party’s internal crisis and mass defections

The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Felix Morka, has accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of being the main cause of the deepening crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking in an interview with TVC on Friday, April 25, Morka said Atiku triggered the internal conflict by going against the PDP’s constitution and zoning agreement during the build-up to the 2023 presidential election.
“The problem in the PDP was Atiku’s obdurate refusal to abide by the convention of his own party and its constitution,” Morka stated.
“He had no business running for that election when, under their constitution, a southern candidate was mandated as, you know, under the rotational agreement to run. He was the one who created the problem. So it wasn’t his nomination. He was, you know, at the root of the problem that the PDP is facing today.”
The PDP has been grappling with a leadership crisis that began during the 2023 presidential primaries and has now escalated with high-profile defections. In recent days, Atiku’s 2023 running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, and Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, both defected to the APC.
Adding to the turmoil, federal lawmaker Ikenga Ugochinyere revealed that two more governors and 40 lawmakers from the PDP may soon decamp, raising concerns over the party’s future.
Responding to claims that the APC may be fueling PDP’s disintegration, Morka dismissed the suggestion, saying the APC has no hand in the PDP’s troubles.
“We are not responsible for strengthening the opposition,” he said. “The APC remains strong and resilient, despite pressures from within and outside the party.”
