PDP: Ugochinyere warns of mass defection by governors and lawmakers

On Friday, April 25, federal lawmaker Ikenga Ugochinyere sounded the alarm over what he called a looming crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), revealing that two more state governors and 40 lawmakers are preparing to defect from the party.

Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato federal constituency of Imo State in the House of Representatives, made the statement while addressing party members in the Akokwa area of Imo State.

He urged the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) to take swift and decisive action to prevent the party from collapsing completely.

“Because of this crisis which we all must stand up to now, I can confirm to you that two more governors from our party want to decamp and 40 lawmakers want to decamp. PDP is sinking and it’s sinking very fast,” Ugochinyere said.

The lawmaker called on the NWC to immediately rectify the removal of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and replace him with someone from the North Central region. He also pushed for the expulsion of the party’s embattled National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, accusing him of working against the party’s interest.

“This is not difficult for the NWC. Do this before what is left goes away… If NWC fails to act, the consequences is that those remaining will go and nothing will remain of the party,” he warned.

Ugochinyere also urged the committee to adopt the recommendations of the Ikimi report, which includes the suspension and removal of Anyanwu.

This warning comes just days after the defection of PDP’s former vice presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, and Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), adding to growing concerns over the future of the PDP.
