IWD: Give women more opportunities in politics, and they will do more - Peter Obi
Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, has urged Nigerians to more actively involve women in politics and governance, insisting that they would have more impact on good policies and good governance if given the chance.
The former governor of Anambra State also pointed out that in the 2023 elections, despite more than 15,000 people running for various offices all over the country, only 10% of the candidates were women, this emphasized the need to give more opportunities to women in governance, as they cannot make the required impact if they aren’t given a chance.
Obi said this in a post on X, as he marked International Women’s Day today.
“I have always made a case for a broad inclusion of women in governance. Our dear women have continued to distinguish themselves in leadership positions and public offices. When given more opportunities, I believe they will do more.” Obi said
“Unfortunately, political participation of women in governance has remained very low, despite the National Gender Policy which demands 35 percent involvement of women in all governance processes,” he added.
Obi emphasizes the need to involve women more in all aspects of Nigerian life, as they have a lot of offer, but it would be difficult for them to fulfill this potential if they are constantly sidelined in certain sectors.
