How I would’ve handled Wike, Atiku situations as PDP Chairman – Segun Sowunmi
Segun Sowunmi, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has shared how he would have handled the situation with Nyesom Wike and Atiku Abubakar if he were the party’s National Chairman.
Speaking on Nigeria Info FM on Thursday, November 28th, 2024, Sowunmi stated that if he were in charge, he would have frozen Wike’s membership after he joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). Sowunmi likened the action to the way universities handle lecturers on sabbatical leave. He explained, “When you are on sabbatical, your membership is frozen, and when you return, it’s activated.”
Sowunmi emphasized that Wike would not have been allowed to remain involved with PDP’s structures, especially in Rivers State, while serving in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. He said, “By freezing his membership, that means you can’t be in charge of the party’s structure either in Rivers or anywhere. You can’t attend our meetings.”
The PDP chieftain also expressed that if he had been Chairman, he would have been tough on Atiku Abubakar following remarks made by his supporters that the PDP was “dead.” Sowunmi explained, “I would have been very hard on Atiku by sending him a very clear message—call your dogs to order. You can’t insist that Damagum is in acting capacity and then say the party is dead. I won’t allow that.”
Sowunmi’s comments underline his view on maintaining discipline within the party and holding members accountable for their actions, especially in the face of significant political shifts.
