Etebo explains decision to join Turkish second division club Genclerbirligi

Nigerian midfielder Oghenekaro Peter Etebo has shared insights into his recent move to Turkish second division club Genclerbirligi.

The 28-year-old made the surprising decision this summer, opting for the modest side despite receiving offers from first division clubs in Turkey and teams in Israel.

Etebo’s journey to Genclerbirligi is particularly notable as he spent nearly a year sidelined due to injury. During his recovery, he trained at the club’s facilities, which allowed him to regain his fitness without any financial obligations.

In an interview with SportsBoom.com, Etebo explained the factors that influenced his choice. “A lot of people were calling me, asking, ‘Why would you go to a second division club in Turkey?’” he said. “From January until the end of the season, I didn’t pay for anything, and I trained with the group — 100 percent.”

He emphasized the importance of the relationship he developed with the coaching staff, recounting advice he received from the coach: “Etebo, I’d tell you something, even before you sign for any team, or before you go anywhere. Just remember that these guys are the ones that looked after you. So, it’s very important.”

Etebo’s decision reflects not only his gratitude toward Genclerbirligi but also his commitment to rebuild his career after a challenging period.
