Enugu state governor mourns musician Igbo Jah after fatal police shooting

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has expressed profound sorrow over the sudden death of renowned local musician Okezie Mba, better known by his stage name Igbo Jah, who was fatally shot by a police officer under unclear circumstances.

The tragic incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters in Enugu. According to a statement from DSP Daniel Ndukwe, spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, Mba had just finished a friendly visit to the Squad’s Headquarters when, for reasons still under investigation, an officer discharged his firearm, fatally wounding the musician. The officer involved, who is part of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, has been arrested and is in police custody.

Governor Mbah, calling the incident “unfortunate,” conveyed his condolences in a Saturday statement, emphasizing the loss felt across the Igbo community. “The untimely death of Okezie Mba is a significant loss to Ndigbo and particularly to the people of Enugu,” Mbah stated, reflecting on the musician’s contributions to preserving Igbo culture through Ogene music.

The governor further assured the public that he has directed a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served, offering his sympathy to Mba’s family and fans worldwide. “On behalf of Ndi Enugu, I send my heartfelt condolences to his family and fans. May God grant his soul eternal repose,” the statement concluded.
