Buhari opens up about hardship, says he relies on Kaduna house rent to feed

On Monday, January 27, 2025, former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari shared some personal challenges he’s facing after leaving office. He explained that he now depends on the rent from one of his two houses in Kaduna to help pay for food.

Buhari was speaking to members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus at the Katsina State Government House. He made it clear that he never used his time as president to make money in dishonest ways. “After my eight years as a civil president, I have only three houses; one in Daura and two in Kaduna,” Buhari said. “I have given one out for renting where I get money for feeding.”

The former president also stressed that no one could accuse him of corruptly enriching himself while in office. “I never enriched myself in a corrupt way while I was president,” he said, highlighting that he worked hard and lived simply.

Buhari also reminded leaders about the importance of being transparent and accountable, especially while in office. He mentioned that many Nigerians don’t fully understand the difficulties involved in running a country and often blame leaders during or after their time in office.
