Skales claims jungle justice explains Nigeria’s lower crime rate compared to UK

On Wednesday, April 9, Nigerian Afrobeats singer Skales made a bold statement during an interview on Just Vibes, suggesting that the practice of extrajudicial punishments, or jungle justice, is the reason why Nigeria has a lower crime rate than the United Kingdom.
In the interview, Skales explained that criminals in Nigeria are deterred by the possibility of facing severe punishment if caught, saying, “There is lesser crime in Nigeria compared to the UK because they know if they [criminals] get caught, there is jungle justice. They burn you alive.”
However, Skales was quick to clarify that he does not support or encourage jungle justice, acknowledging its extrajudicial nature. He stated that while it may act as a deterrent, he does not condone such actions.
During the conversation, Skales also discussed the evolution of Afrobeats as a musical genre. He explained that Afrobeats cannot be defined by a specific sound, describing it as more of an umbrella term for a variety of musical styles rather than a singular genre.
His comments on both crime and Afrobeats have sparked conversations across social media, highlighting the intersection of culture, law, and music in Nigeria.
