On Sunday, November 24, 2024, unidentified gunmen launched a violent attack on operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Service along the Amesi-Uga Road in Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra State. The attack left one member of the vigilante group injured, and their operational vehicle was set ablaze.

Anambra State Police Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a press statement issued on Monday, November 25. He stated that police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, rescuing the injured vigilante member, who was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“The police secured the scene of the attack to prevent further criminal activities and to safeguard properties in the area,” Ikenga said. He added that joint security forces had intensified patrols in the region, using intelligence-led operations to limit the criminal group’s movements and ultimately arrest those responsible.

In a separate incident, Ikenga reported that police operatives from the Okpoko Divisional Headquarters responded to a distress call concerning a fire outbreak at Chukwunonso Street along Obodoukwu Road, Okpoko. “The scene was cordoned off to prevent hoodlums from exploiting the situation to loot properties, and swift action by fire service operatives brought the situation under control,” Ikenga said. He also noted that an investigation had been initiated to determine the cause of the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future.
