Gani Adams urges Southwest Governors to ramp up vigilance against rising insecurity
The Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Abiodun Ige Adams, has issued a call to action for the governors of the six Southwest states, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and the establishment of robust security frameworks to safeguard the region.
This urgent appeal comes in the wake of an alert from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who on Monday, January 6, 2025, during the annual inter-faith service in Ibadan, highlighted the invasion of bandits escaping military offensives in the northwest. Adams underscored the seriousness of Makinde’s warning, stating it demands immediate attention.
“Insecurity has been a significant challenge across Nigeria, and unfortunately, the South West has now become a new battleground for bandits and kidnappers,” Adams remarked.
He recalled his previous warnings to the region’s governors, urging them to collaborate with him in utilizing the local security structures to eliminate the threat of bandits and kidnappers.
Adams pointed out, “The alarm raised by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State was a wake-up call for all the governors in the South West. I raised a similar alarm last year and nothing was done and it is sad that up to the present time nothing has really changed, except that insecurity is increasing by the day.”
He further emphasized the strategic importance of Oyo State, saying, “Oyo State is the political capital of the South West region and anything that happens in the state, no doubt, has a direct effect on the entire region.”
Adams concluded with a plea for immediate action, “So, I urge all the governors in the South West to be vigilant and do the needful by addressing the security situation in their respective states before it is too late.”
