FG targets 10 million new jobs as Nigeria leads Africa’s digital trade revolution

On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, Nigeria was officially named Africa’s Digital Trade Champion, a role expected to create over 10 million new jobs across the continent by 2025.

Vice President Kashim Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to leading Africa’s digital trade agenda under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), while highlighting Nigeria’s progress as the continent’s digital trade hub.

In a statement delivered by the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, at the AfCFTA Digital Trade Workshop and Global Market in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the transformative effect Nigeria’s innovations in mobile payments have had on cross-border payments, financial inclusion, and digital transactions across Africa.

Shettima explained, “With over 109 million internet users and a thriving mobile economy, Nigeria is positioned to lead Africa’s digital commerce evolution.” The Vice President also underscored the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol’s goal of increasing intra-African trade from 18% in 2022 to 50% by 2030.

During the event, Shettima spoke about the success of various initiatives aimed at fostering digital growth, such as the National Talent Export Programme and the Outsource to Nigeria Initiative, which open up opportunities for Nigerian talent on a global scale. Nigeria’s increasing digital infrastructure and investments in port facilities were also noted as key to strengthening its digital trade capabilities.

The workshop, which gathered government officials, industry experts, and private sector stakeholders, marked a significant step in Nigeria’s drive to modernize its trade systems and boost its non-oil exports. Additionally, Nigeria’s role as AfCFTA Digital Trade Champion was formally recognized at the 38th African Union Heads of State Summit, with President Bola Tinubu receiving commendation for his leadership in promoting digital trade.

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, applauded the efforts of the Tinubu administration, noting that digital trade eliminates barriers to business participation in both regional and global markets. Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Ayodele Olawande, highlighted the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund’s role in supporting young entrepreneurs, especially in digital services, agriculture, and manufacturing.

The event also saw key figures from Nigerian government agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service and the National Identity Management Commission discuss their ongoing efforts to facilitate digital trade and improve trade transparency.

As Nigeria continues to champion the AfCFTA’s digital trade initiatives, the focus remains on unlocking Africa’s digital potential, boosting economic growth, and creating jobs for millions across the continent.
