Edo guber election: Police cautioned against partisanship as voting day approaches
With the Edo State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024, the Edo State Police Command has been advised to maintain neutrality and avoid any appearance of bias.
The warning, issued about 10 days before the election, came from the Edo Movement for the Masses in a statement released on Wednesday, September 11.
The statement, signed by the group’s leader, Eriki Johnson, urged the Police to avoid engaging in political activities and to refrain from arresting members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) without valid reasons.
The group warned that unwarranted arrests of PDP politicians could escalate tensions in the state.
The statement criticized the Police for allegedly supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ignoring “clear hoodlum activities” by APC supporters while targeting those involved in lawful campaigning.
The group emphasized that the Police should serve all citizens equally, regardless of their political affiliation.
According to NIGERIANS ONLINE, the Edo State Government had reported that 10 PDP members, including a local government chairman and State Vigilante Network operatives, were arrested and taken to Abuja by the Nigeria Police on Tuesday.
Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, confirmed the arrests.
