Court sets N10 million bail each for 10 protesters involved in hunger strike

On Wednesday, September 11, the Federal High Court in Abuja decided that each of the ten #endbadgovernance protesters must pay N10 million to be released on bail.

The protesters were accused of trying to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu between July 1 and August 4 this year.

Judge Emeka Nwite allowed the protesters to be released on bail but with certain conditions. Each protester must find a person, known as a surety, who will also pay N10 million and must live in Abuja.

The sureties must own property in Abuja and provide documents for these properties to the court. They also need to swear an affidavit showing they have the means to be a surety.

Both the protesters and the sureties must give their international passports and three recent passport photos to the court.

Judge Nwite refused to accept objections from the Inspector General of Police regarding the bail and ordered that the protesters cannot join any public rallies during their trial.

Until they meet these bail conditions, the protesters will stay in prison. Their trial is set to start on Friday, September 27, 2024.

The protesters are accused of committing serious offenses during a week-long nationwide protest, including allegedly trying to take over the government, burning down a police station, and damaging other public properties. They are charged under sections 96, 410, and 413 of the Penal Code.

The Inspector General of Police claims that the protesters broke into the Abacha Army Barracks and called on the military to take over the government.

They are also accused of attempting to force their way into the government offices and inciting the public against the government.

The accused are Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye, Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaluwa Eleojo Simon, Angel Love Innocent, Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello Nurudeen Khamis, and Abduldalam Zubair.
