PDP Ward leaders in Abia face suspension over nomination of man as ‘Women Leader’

On Wednesday, April 9, a disciplinary committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, led by Goddy Nnorom, recommended the suspension of several members after it was discovered that a man had been nominated as the Women Leader in the Isuamawu Ward 4 of the PDP in Isuikwuato Local Government Area.

The committee also found that an elderly woman had been appointed as the Youth Leader, which sparked outrage among the women and youth members of the party in the area.

The committee, which was set up to investigate the issue, said that the nominations were a violation of party protocols and the natural sequence of leadership roles, given that there were eligible youths and young women in the ward who could have filled those positions.

In response, the disciplinary committee recommended the suspension of the members responsible for these nominations and anyone causing further disruptions within the party. The committee emphasized that the selections violated key sections of the 2017 PDP Constitution (as amended), particularly sections 58(1)-(a)(b)(d)(e)(g)(i), which govern party leadership roles.

Citing a recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed that party membership and leadership matters are an internal affair of political parties, Nnorom’s committee further stated that the disciplinary actions were in accordance with the party’s constitution. The committee’s recommendations included adopting penalties as outlined in Section 59(1)(d) of the 2017 PDP Constitution (as amended).
