BREAKING: ASUP lecturers plan warning strike over unmet demands starting December 2
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced a two-week warning strike, set to begin on Monday, December 2nd, 2024.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Union’s National Executive Council in Abuja on Thursday, November 28th. ASUP leaders expressed frustration over the government’s failure to address several important demands that have been raised in the past.
ASUP President, Comrade Kpanja Shammah, shared the news about the upcoming strike, stating that the eleven key demands, which the government has not met, date back to previous administrations, especially the one led by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a prior statement, ASUP had given the Federal Government and other relevant agencies a 15-day ultimatum to review and reverse decisions that were not in line with the Polytechnics Act and other regulations that govern polytechnic education.
The Union has also accused the government of ignoring clear rules set in the Federal Polytechnics Act, as well as the regulations of state-owned institutions. ASUP also raised concerns about the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), claiming that the organization has been interfering with the regular duties of polytechnic Academic Boards, especially when it comes to admitting Higher National Diploma (HND) students into polytechnic programs.
