Arsenal dragged to penalties, goes through to the quarterfinals

Arsenal needed extra time, then penalties to pull away from FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie last night.

Recall that Arsenal lost the first leg 0-1 to a Wanderson Galeno 94th-minute strike. This meant that the North London club was behind on aggregate coming into this game.

Arsenal went on to take the lead in the 41st minute when the captain Martin Odegaard made a nice pass to put the ball in the path of Leandro Trossard. Trossard finished beautifully.

This goal put them level on aggregate, but they could not find another goal in the game, neither could Porto. This forced the game to go on for another 30 minutes, before the game was decided by penalty kicks.

Arsenal scored all four penalties they took, but their goalkeeper David Raya, saved two of Porto’s kicks, winning them the shootout.

Arsenal is now in the last eight of the competition, joining FC Barcelona, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and FC Bayern.
