APC chieftain Okpala calls for sanctions against BoT member Apugo over alleged anti-party activities

On Monday, September 9, 2024, Chukwudi Okpala, a prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) member in Abia State, accused Prince Benjamin Benedict Apugo, a Board of Trustees (BoT) member, of undermining the party.

Okpala claimed that Apugo’s recent comments and actions were damaging to the APC. Apugo had responded to Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu’s statement that the APC would take over the Abia State governorship in 2027.

Apugo argued that Abia’s focus should be on state development and completion of federal projects rather than political promises.

Okpala expressed disappointment, saying Apugo’s remarks were consistent with his history of causing controversy for personal gain. He noted that Apugo had previously criticized Kalu’s statement about the APC’s future plans for Abia State.

“It is expected that a loyal party member would support Rt. Hon. Kalu’s call and work towards APC’s leadership in Abia State. Instead, Apugo appears to use these opportunities to show false loyalty to Governor Otti, despite their known differences,” Okpala said.

He added that Kalu’s call for Abia stakeholders to work together and attract federal interest was a positive step. Okpala argued that Apugo, if genuinely interested in the state’s progress, should support APC’s goals rather than acting in a self-serving manner.

Okpala urged the APC to sanction or expel Apugo for what he described as anti-party activities. He criticized Apugo for his lack of participation in party meetings and for allegedly supporting candidates from other parties, portraying him as a political saboteur.
