Why Cristiano Ronaldo cried after missing a penalty at Euro 2024
Cristiano Ronaldo, the veteran Portuguese footballer, has shared the emotional reason behind his tears after missing a crucial penalty at Euro 2024.
Ronaldo was visibly upset after missing a penalty in the 105th minute of the Round of 16 match against Slovenia at Euro 2024 in Germany. Despite his miss, Portugal managed to advance to the quarter-finals by winning the match in a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Ronaldo stepped up and successfully converted the first penalty for Portugal less than 30 minutes after his earlier miss. In a recent conversation on his YouTube channel with Rio Ferdinand, the 39-year-old opened up about his feelings.
“I cried the day I missed the penalty even though I thought Oblak made a great save,” Ronaldo said.
“When I cried, it wasn’t because I felt that if I missed and Portugal were eliminated, the world would collapse on me. It’s not because of that.
“Imagine scoring in the last 27 penalties. I missed, and in that moment, I felt bad about myself. I didn’t even think about that.
“The people who come to the stadium—your kids, your mom, your girlfriend, everyone—I felt sad because of that.”
