UI clears 4,215 for 2024/2025 resumption, urges focus on discipline, excellence

The University of Ibadan (UI) has officially cleared 4,215 students for the 2024/2025 academic session, out of over 22,000 applicants who sought admission into Nigeria’s premier university.

This was revealed during the matriculation ceremony held on Wednesday, April 16, where the university formally welcomed its newest cohort of undergraduates.

Speaking at the event, Vice Chancellor Professor Kayode Adebowale emphasized the significance of matriculation, calling it “a rite of passage” that marks a student’s formal entry into university life.

He explained that out of 22,000 applicants, 4,650 candidates were offered provisional admission, and 4,215 successfully completed the clearance process.

“You are no longer secondary school students. You must now learn to work independently. This university does not spoon-feed. You must embrace discipline and strive for excellence,” Adebowale told the new students.

He also reminded them that the expectations placed on UI students by the wider society are high and urged them to live up to the university’s long-standing reputation for academic distinction.

Delivering the matriculation lecture, Dr. Olukayode Abiola Aiyenuyo, an alumnus of the university, encouraged the students to make the most of their time at UI.

“After my years here, I emerged better equipped to face life. A chapter in your life has closed, and a new one has begun,” he said.
He also encouraged the students to seek guidance from God and stay on the right path to achieve lasting success.

The university has consistently ranked among the top institutions in Africa and continues to uphold rigorous academic standards while calling on its students to reflect values of discipline, character, and resilience.
