PDP fires back at Umahi, says it is ready to reclaim power in Ebonyi

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has strongly responded to comments made by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who claimed that there is no longer an opposition party in the state.
In a statement released on Thursday, April 17, the PDP’s state chairman, Mr. Onyemaechi Nwele, described Umahi’s remarks as “deceitful and misleading,” insisting that the PDP remains a formidable political force in Ebonyi with a clear strategy to return to power.
“I feel compelled to address recent pronouncements by Sen. Engr. David Nweze Umahi, the erstwhile governor of Ebonyi State and current Minister for Works,” Nwele said.
“Sen. Umahi claimed that there is no political opposition in the state, portraying the situation as propitious for the incumbent governor, Francis Nwifuru, attributing the absence of opposition to the defection of erstwhile adversaries to the ruling party, APC.”
Nwele dismissed the claim, stating that the PDP is not only active but is also working with a lucid vision and strategic blueprint to reclaim the governorship and secure legislative seats in the 2027 general election.
He went further to accuse Umahi of using political tactics to reconcile with Governor Nwifuru, allegedly in a bid to protect his political future, especially if challenges arise at the federal level under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“The PDP will not engage in political machinations with Sen. Umahi, who seems eager to reconcile with the governor, perhaps anticipating political headwinds at the federal level. His motivations are clear, as he seeks to safeguard his political clout should future opportunities for a senatorial seat emerge,” Nwele stated.
The PDP chairman called on members and supporters across Ebonyi to disregard Umahi’s statement, assuring them that the party remains focused and will defeat the APC come 2027.
