Obidient Movement will seek alternatives if Labour Party resists good governance – Yunusa Tanko warns
On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, stated that the movement would explore new avenues to serve the Nigerian people if the Labour Party (LP) resists the push for good governance and accountability.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News in Abuja, Tanko emphasized that the Obidient Movement is larger than the Labour Party and has broad support across Nigeria, including from academicians, traders, and members of other political parties. He highlighted that the movement is committed to addressing the challenges it faced in the 2023 general elections, especially in terms of lack of structures at the polling unit level.
“The Obidient Movement is bigger than the Labour Party,” Tanko said. “We have support everywhere, from all walks of life. If it becomes clear that the Labour Party is not ready to embrace good governance, we will explore other opportunities to serve the Nigerian people.”
Tanko reflected on the shortfalls of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, particularly the failure to cover 1,760 polling units. He noted that the Obidient Movement is working to address this gap and build a stronger foundation at the grassroots level.
“During the 2023 general elections, we were rightly criticized for not having structures in all of the polling units,” Tanko admitted. “But we are preparing ourselves now to face the challenges and build those structures.”
He also pointed out that the movement’s influence has grown beyond the initial backing of Peter Obi, the LP’s presidential candidate, with significant support in regions such as the north. Tanko addressed concerns among Nigerians about the performance of Labour Party lawmakers elected with Obi’s influence, emphasizing the need for stronger internal structures within the movement to address public dissatisfaction.
“If the Labour Party is not ready to assimilate the idea of good governance, we will look for other opportunities to ensure that the Nigerian people get the leadership they deserve,” Tanko concluded.
