Nigerian senate unanimously passes vote of confidence in Akpabio amidst impeachment rumors

The Nigerian Senate has overwhelmingly expressed its support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio, passing a unanimous vote of confidence amidst swirling rumors of an impeachment plot.

This decisive move aims to quell speculation and reaffirm stability within the upper chamber.

On Wednesday, Akpabio addressed social media reports alleging the Department of State Service (DSS) had surrounded the National Assembly due to a potential impeachment threat. Dismissing these claims as “fake news” and “mischief,” Akpabio reassured the public that the Senate was functioning peacefully.

Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, representing Kebbi North, subsequently raised a matter of privilege, condemning the allegations as an attempt to sow division and discord along ethnic or regional lines. Abdullahi emphasized the importance of unity and stability within the Senate, urging lawmakers to rise against any attempts to undermine its leadership.

The vote of confidence, initiated by Abdullahi, marks a significant display of solidarity among senators. This is not the first time Akpabio’s leadership has faced challenges; in November 2023, his position was under threat and debated upon. However, this is the first instance of a unanimous vote of confidence passed by lawmakers under the 10th Assembly.

By passing this vote, the Senate seeks to dispel rumors and ensure continuity in its legislative duties. The move also underscores the chamber’s commitment to maintaining unity and stability, crucial for effective governance.

In a significant show of unity, the Senate has closed ranks behind Akpabio, sending a strong message against speculation and misinformation. As the upper chamber continues its legislative work, this vote of confidence is expected to bolster stability and facilitate effective governance.
