Nigerian artists dominate 2024 grammy nominations for best African music performance

Nigerian musicians have secured key nominations for the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, with Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Asake, Wizkid, Tems, and a Chris Brown collaboration featuring Davido and Lojay all vying for Best African Music Performance. This category, introduced by the Recording Academy to honor African music, highlights the growing influence of Afrobeats and African talent on the global stage.

The Best African Music Performance award debuted this year, and last year’s winner, South African artist Tyla, set a historic precedent by also charting on the Billboard Hot 100 with her single “Water.” This year’s nominees reflect the genre’s expanding reach and the impact of Nigerian artists on international music.

Among the nominees, Tems leads Nigerian contenders with three Grammy nominations, including one for Best Global Music Album, affirming her global success. Burna Boy’s “Higher,” Yemi Alade’s “Tomorrow,” and the standout “MMS” by Asake and Wizkid all make strong cases for the Golden Gramophone. “Sensational,” a track by Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, rounds out the nominees, blending African and international sounds.

In addition to honoring African music, this year’s Grammys highlight other global artists like Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Taylor Swift, who dominate with multiple nominations. The Recording Academy also redefined categories this year, aiming to increase inclusivity and diversity within the awards.

The Grammy Awards ceremony, which will take place on February 4, 2024, will showcase these acclaimed artists, underscoring the impact of African music on the global stage.
