Ali Ndume, the Senator representing Borno South, has appealed to his colleagues in the Senate to allow Uchenna, the widow of the late senator representing Anambra South, Ifeanyi Ubah, to succeed him.
Mr Ndume made the appeal on Tuesday during a valedictory session held to honour the late Senator on who died in July at the age of 52.
Speaking on the floor of the Senate, Mr Ndume said doing so would preserve Mr Ubah’s legacy.
“What I want to appeal to you, Mr. President, is that we keep the spirit and aspirations of Ifeanyi alive,” he said.
Recalling historical precedents, Mr Ndume referenced Magaret Okadigbo, who joined the Senate to replace her late husband.
He also cited Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, who served in the Senate to support her husband’s vision.
Mr Ndume described the widow as a strong support system for her late husband, adding that she would be an ideal candidate to ensure continuity and honour for the people of Anambra South.
Mr Ndume urged the Senate President and his colleagues to support this initiative.
“Let us support the family to have a spiritual representative of Ifeanyi here in the chamber when the election of Anambra of the senatorial district that he represents comes up.
“This will ensure continuity and honour for the Anambra south senatorial district,” he added.
