On Thursday, March 20, 2025, England captain Harry Kane expressed his surprise over the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as the new manager of the national team.
Tuchel took over from Gareth Southgate in October 2024, and Kane admitted that he “didn’t expect it,” as he had never considered the former Bayern Munich boss for the role of national team coach.
Speaking about the appointment, Kane said, “I was surprised, if I’m honest. Yeah, I didn’t expect it. I guess I just hadn’t really thought of him as a national team coach.”
However, Kane quickly added that he was excited about the prospect of working with Tuchel again. “But yeah, once it was announced, I was really excited because I had the pleasure of working with him last year, and I know what he can bring. I knew what he could bring to this type of squad that we have.”
Tuchel, England’s third foreign manager, takes on the job for the first time at international level and will remain in charge until the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
