Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has presented a historic N549.16 billion budget for 2025, prioritizing education, health, and infrastructure development in a bid to stimulate growth and improve residents’ welfare.
Named the “Budget of Hope, Human Capital, and Economic Development,” the proposal allocates 57 percent (N312.63 billion) to capital projects, with the remaining 43 percent (N236.53 billion) for recurrent spending.
Education receives the highest allocation at N168.35 billion, marking 31 percent of the total budget—an unprecedented share for the sector in Kano. Health care and infrastructure follow with allocations of 16.5 percent (N90.6 billion) and 12.87 percent (N70.68 billion), respectively. Additional funding is directed toward governance institutions (17.57 percent), security and justice (four percent), and agriculture (3.83 percent).
Governor Yusuf underscored his administration’s focus on human capital development, announcing plans to revive the Kano Education Development Support (KEDS) agency to secure additional educational funding. “We are committed to expanding access to quality education despite limited resources, and I believe the legislature will support this initiative for full implementation,” Yusuf stated during the presentation.
The governor also highlighted proposed reforms aimed at enhancing governance, including bills addressing social protection, education trust, and civil service improvements. “Our 2025 budget is a strategic balance of social and economic goals. We are committed to alleviating poverty, creating employment, and promoting agriculture,” he said, calling on the Assembly for prompt approval of the budget.
In response, Speaker Jibril Falgore assured the Assembly’s support, pledging to facilitate a swift review and passage of the budget. “We understand the importance of timely implementation for the benefit of our people, and we will work diligently to ensure this budget is reviewed promptly,” he affirmed. The Assembly will begin deliberations on the budget in the coming weeks.
