Gospel singer Sinach faces N5bn lawsuit over alleged copyright infringement of ‘Way Maker’
On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, popular gospel musician Sinach found herself at the center of a legal storm when music producer Michael Oluwole, also known as Maye, filed a lawsuit accusing her of copyright infringement. Maye is seeking N5 billion in damages over Sinach’s 2016 hit song, Way Maker.
The lawsuit, registered under the number FHC/L/CS/402/2024, claims that Maye is the co-author and rightful co-owner of the song. He demands a declaration of his authorship rights, as well as general damages for what he describes as a cumulative infringement of his intellectual property.
Sinach, who has been widely recognized for her contributions to gospel music long before Way Maker became a global hit, firmly denies the accusations. She asserts that she is the sole creator of the song.
The trial, which began at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, was adjourned until January 29 and 30, 2025.
