FG to develop cultural centre to be named after King Jaja of Opobo

The Federal Government has set up a technical committee to develop the King Jaja of Opobo Cultural and Historical Centre in Opobo, Rivers State. This project is designed to honor the renowned King Jaja of Opobo and highlight the region’s cultural heritage.

Rep. Awaji-Inombek Abiante, who represents Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency, expressed appreciation for the Federal Government’s commitment to the project. He spoke during the inauguration of the technical committee by the Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Bar. Hannatu Musawa, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Abiante, a key advocate for the project, said, “This initiative will preserve the legacy of King Jaja through extensive research and help showcase our heritage. It will create jobs, boost tourism, and benefit all Nigerians. We’re excited to start this journey after seven years of effort.”

He added, “The project will turn the area into a tourism hub, with its rich aquatic resources, nearby wildlife, and beautiful beaches. The blue economy and other resources will also be integrated.”

Minister Hannatu Musawa emphasized the project’s importance in preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage. She said, “This project represents a significant step in enhancing Nigeria’s arts and culture. It aligns with our goal to celebrate past heroes and promote cultural tourism. The centre will also create jobs and contribute to Nigeria’s GDP.”

The Minister urged the technical committee to work diligently on the project, including creating a work plan and implementation strategy.

King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, the paramount ruler of Opobo, also thanked the Federal Government. He said, “This is the first time the government is taking real steps to honor King Jaja’s contributions to Nigeria’s history. We’ve long wanted this, and we’re thrilled that the government is finally making it happen.”

The project aims to boost cultural tourism, create job opportunities, and enhance Nigeria’s economic growth. The technical committee will oversee the planning and execution of the centre.
