Euro 2024: Spain crowned champions as England stages failed comeback

At the final whistle of the Euro 2024 final on Sunday, July 14, for the first time in history, a men’s international footballing side was crowned European Champions for the fourth time. Spain faced off against England in a hotly contested final, with the former winning the game 2-1.

Luis De La Fuente’s men started the game very well, leaving Gareth Southgate’s England behind the pace and out of sorts at different points in the opening 30 minutes.

This pressure paid off, because in the 47th minute, Spain’s Nico Williams scored to put De La Fuente’s men ahead. However, substitute Cole Palmer scored two minutes after coming, rifling one past a hapless Unai Simon from 21 yards in the 73rd minute.

England fans thought the team now had the momentum, but that was not the case, because Spain just continued controlling proceedings.

Then in the 86th minute, substitute Mikel Oyarzabal got on the end of a superb cross from Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and slapped the ball past Jordan Pickford who had come off his line, sending everyone in Spain into a frenzy.

Oyarzabal’s goal turned out to be the winning goal, making Spain European Champions and now four-time Euros winners
