Euro 2024: Germany tops Group A after high-scoring Round 1 fixtures

The first round of fixtures in Group A of the 2024 Euros has been played and it was entertaining, with Germany scoring five goals in the opening game of the competition, and Switzerland putting three goals past Hungary the following day.

Toni Kroos was again a key factor in Germany’s fortunes, commanding the midfield with his perfect passing, and dictating the tempo of the game against Scotland.

Florian Wirtz opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and Jamal Musiala doubled the lead in the 19th minute. Julian Nagelsmann’s men got a penalty overturned in the 26th minute but got another in the 44th minute that stood. Kai Havertz converted it for 3-0.

Substitute Niklas Fulkrug scored in the 68th minute to pile more misery on the Scots.

Antonio Rudiger scored an own goal to make it 4-1, but another substitute, this time Emre Can, restored the 4-goal lead in the 93rd minute, making it quite a resounding victory for the Euros hosts.

In the other Group A fixture, Switzerland faced off against Hungary on Saturday, June 15, and saw off Marco Rossi’s men in a convincing 3-1 victory.

Switzerland’s Kwadwo Duah put his country ahead in the 12th minute, and it seemed Murat Yakin’s men would run away with it when Michel Aebischer doubled the lead in the 45th minute, but Hungary pulled one back in the 66th minute through Barnabas Varga.

Switzerland eventually put the nail in the coffin in the 93rd minute through substitute Breel Embolo, making it 3-1.

Those results put Germany top of the group, Switzerland second, Hungary third, and Scotland bottom.
