Euro 2024: France forces Portugal out on penalties, joins Spain in semis
Spain’s opponent in the Euro 2024 semifinal has been confirmed after France won the quarterfinal tie against Portugal on penalties, with the scoreline still 0-0 after 120 minutes.
It was indeed a difficult game for France, with Roberto Martinez’s Portugal getting the better chances throughout the game.
Martinez got desperate to do something different, so much so that he took off young prodigy Rafael Leao and chief creator Bruno Fernandes in the second half, replacing them with Joao Felix and Francisco Conceicao.
Felix’s penalty ended up being the decisive one, his miss being the only penalty in the shootout that did not go in, and ensuring that France scoring its 5th penalty would cement a semifinal place for Didier Deschamps’s men.
France will now face Spain in the semifinal.
