Respected football news correspondent Matt Law, of The Daily Telegraph, has shed light on Chelsea’s reasoning behind their decision not to meet Victor Osimhen’s financial demands during the summer transfer window.
Speaking on the London Is Blue Podcast via Football Transfers on Friday, September 6, Law remarked:
“For me, they [Chelsea] can’t go out and pay him [Osimhen] £300,000 a week because that is going to cause massive issues when you’ve just given Cole Palmer an uplift that is nowhere near that really,” Law explained.
“It would have been risky. You could easily have had another Lukaku situation.”
Chelsea had shown interest in acquiring the Nigerian striker from Napoli. However, despite their efforts and willingness to consider a loan deal, the Premier League club was unable to finalize Osimhen’s transfer on the last day of the window.
The 25-year-old forward, who turned down Chelsea’s proposal, eventually joined Turkish Super Lig club Galatasaray on a season-long loan.
