Bobrisky sues EFCC, national assembly for N1.2 billion over alleged rights violation
Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has filed a N1.2 billion lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Assembly, alleging violations of his fundamental rights.
The lawsuit comes after activist VeryDarkMan released an alleged audio recording in which Bobrisky purportedly claimed to have paid N15 million to EFCC officials to drop money laundering charges against him. The recording also claimed Bobrisky’s “godfather” and Nigerian Correctional Service Controller-General Haliru Nababa arranged for him to serve a six-month sentence in a private apartment instead of prison.
Bobrisky has denied the authenticity of the recording, describing it as doctored, and threatened legal action against VeryDarkMan. However, the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions has resolved to investigate the bribery allegations, inviting Bobrisky, EFCC chairman Ola Olukoyode, Nababa, and VeryDarkMan to testify.
In the lawsuit, Bobrisky claims EFCC acted on hearsay by initiating an investigation without verifying the audio’s authenticity, leading to his social media ridicule, threats, and invasion of privacy. He is seeking N200 million in damages from the EFCC for “psychotic trauma” and N1 billion from the National Assembly for alleged violations of his rights to fair hearing, privacy, and freedom of movement.
The court document shared on Instagram reads, “The sum of one billion against the 1st respondent being damages for unlawful attempt to violate the right to fair hearing… The sum of two hundred million naira against the 2nd respondent being damages suffered, psychotic trauma, mental torture and criminal stigmatization caused by the reckless report given by the 2nd respondent.”
The legal battle adds another layer of controversy to Bobrisky’s public life, as his case continues to attract significant attention.
