AFCONQ 2025: Troost-Ekong warns Super Eagles against complacency
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has cautioned Augustine Eguavoen’s squad to remain vigilant and avoid complacency following their narrow 1-0 victory over Libya’s Mediterranean Knights in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Friday, October 11, in Uyo.
A late goal from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru secured all three points for the Super Eagles, placing Nigeria at the top of Group D with seven points after three matches. They currently lead over Benin Republic, Rwanda, and Libya.
The Super Eagles are set to face Libya again in the reverse fixture on Tuesday, October 15, in Benghazi.
In the post-match press conference, Troost-Ekong emphasized the importance of maintaining focus, stating, “It’s never done until the fat lady sings, they say. It’s a good start for us. We knew how important this first game was, especially when you play a double-header.”
He acknowledged Libya’s defensive strategy, noting, “We know that Libya came here to try to get a point, and they really played very defensively. I think it would have been in their favour if they got that point.”
