Adepoju urges NFF to give Eguavoen permanent Super Eagles role

Former Nigerian international, Mutiu Adepoju, has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to offer Augustine Eguavoen the permanent role as head coach of the Super Eagles.

Eguavoen, who took charge of the national team on an interim basis in September 2024, has overseen a successful campaign in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifiers, guiding the team to three wins, two draws, and one defeat. His efforts have secured Nigeria’s qualification for the prestigious tournament.

Despite reports that the NFF is considering hiring a foreign coach, Adepoju, who played alongside Eguavoen in the national team, believes the 59-year-old coach has done well and deserves to continue in his role.

“I would rate him very well. Number one, we’ve qualified for the AFCON, which is one of the objectives,” Adepoju said in an interview with Brila FM on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. “I would say he has done well and is still doing well. They should keep encouraging him. I believe he’s getting things done, and I will rate him high. Let’s just keep supporting him.”

Adepoju’s comments come as many fans and experts continue to debate whether Eguavoen should be given a longer-term contract or if the NFF should go ahead with their reported plans to bring in a foreign coach.
