Tinubu pledges health sector reform, transfers akure teaching hospital to federal university

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s health sector into a globally competitive system.

He gave the assurance on Thursday in Akure, Ondo State, during the official transfer of the Akure complex of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) to the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH).

Speaking through the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to support the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare delivery system.

According to Pate, the new federal teaching hospital will significantly boost medical training, research, and healthcare services in Ondo State and beyond.

“I want to thank the governor and his team for the amazing collaboration that brought us to this point. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to changing the health and social landscape of this country with boldness and determination,” Pate said.

He assured health workers of improved welfare, training, and career growth under the new federal arrangement, noting that the facility would produce future specialists who would serve across Nigeria and Africa.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Olamide Adelami, described the handover as a “transformative beginning for healthcare in the state.”

“By handing over this asset to the Federal Government, we are unlocking a stream of superior funding, advanced equipment, and stronger inclusion in national and international research networks,” he added.
