Nigerian singer Augustine Kelechi, popularly known as Tekno, has shared his thoughts on how the COVID-19 pandemic changed romantic relationships, claiming that love has not been the same since 2020.
Speaking during an interview with Cool FM Lagos, the Pana singer said the lockdown forced many couples to spend extended periods together, leading some to question their feelings for their partners.
According to Tekno, the experience left many people emotionally exhausted and less interested in pursuing long-term relationships.
“I think since after 2020, love is not the same,” he said.
“I think during the lockdown people got to spend time with their lovers and realised, ‘Maybe I didn’t love this person as much as I think.’ I think we just grew fatigued of the ones we thought we loved the most.”
The singer also suggested that spending too much time together without periods of separation can affect relationships.
“If you can’t appreciate the absence then the presence doesn’t really matter. So, I feel like since 2020, people have leaned into not wanting to love as much,” he said.
Tekno further claimed that marriages have become less stable in recent years and alleged that infidelity has increased, although he did not provide evidence to support the claim.
“There was a time when love was a thing, even our movies revolved around love. But now movies are just clout. It doesn’t feel organic,” he added.
His comments have since sparked conversations on social media, with some users agreeing that the pandemic changed how people approach relationships, while others argued that economic pressures and changing societal values have had a greater impact on modern romance.
