Shehu Sani explains why recalling a senator can be so costly

On Saturday, March 22, former senator Shehu Sani shared his thoughts on the high cost of recalling a sitting senator, highlighting the financial burden it creates.

His comments came amid rumors that there might be an attempt to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central. This potential recall followed her sexual harassment allegation against the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

In a Facebook post, Shehu Sani explained that recalling a senator is “a very expensive plot that can only be supported by the state financially.” He added that a senator facing such a recall would need to spend large sums of money or rely on the support of their constituents to survive the process.

“Every person elected into office will naturally have their battles to fight,” he wrote. “These battles take up time, emotions, and resources. Sitting in power is like sitting on a thorn. There’s no rest or breathing space for the head that wears the crown.”

He also reflected on the emotional and physical toll of holding office, saying, “We have been through that experience and fire, and I can feel the troubles of those in the office. That’s why you see people age faster by the time they exit the office.”

Sani concluded with a message on the challenges of power: “The day you get elected as a Councillor, lawmaker, Governor, or President, that is bye-bye to your mental peace until your exit. Power is not a bed of roses.”
