The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill for the establishment of the Federal Oil and Gas Hospital in Benikrukru, Delta State, aimed at providing specialized medical care for oil and gas workers and host communities.
The bill’s passage followed the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Health, chaired by Senator Banigo Ipalibo Harry (PDP, Rivers).
According to Senator Harry, the bill was sponsored by Senator Joel Thomas (APC, Delta) and received strong support from stakeholders during its public hearing phase.
She explained that the proposed hospital would address the numerous health hazards faced by workers and communities involved in oil exploration, including terminal illnesses, cancer, and occupational injuries. These conditions, she said, require expert care and dedicated health infrastructure.
“The neglect of these communities and workers has contributed to agitation in the Niger Delta, which in turn impacts national development,” she noted.
Senator Harry highlighted Delta State as a strategic location, given its role as a major hub of oil exploration. The hospital, she added, would provide accessible and comprehensive healthcare, including emergency services and occupational health programs.
She emphasized that the institution would also help reduce treatment delays and improve medical response times, ultimately enhancing the well-being of those most affected by oil and gas activities.
Following clause-by-clause consideration, the Senate unanimously passed the bill, marking a key step toward strengthening healthcare delivery and promoting stability in Nigeria’s oil-rich region.
