Igbo youth group links APC support in 2027 to Nnamdi Kanu’s release

The All Igbo Youth Forum (AIYF) has declared that its support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections will hinge on the Federal Government’s action regarding the continued detention of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking at a press conference in Umuahia on Tuesday, AIYF National President, Chief Chinedum Obilor, said the group had extended its earlier ultimatum to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by two months, urging the government to initiate dialogue or take decisive action on the matter.

“We appreciate the efforts made in the past for the release of some of our daughters and sons, and we believe that granting freedom to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would further promote peace in the region,” Obilor stated.

He emphasized that Kanu’s continued detention remains a deep concern in the South East, adding that elder statesmen have consistently called for his release, citing regional peace and justice.

Obilor also noted that the AIYF had suspended plans for a mass march, following an appeal from Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who requested additional time to engage with the President on the issue.

He warned that unless grassroots grievances are addressed, political efforts in the South East may face resistance in the run-up to 2027.

On the broader political landscape, the group reiterated its support for power rotation to the South, insisting that equity demands the South be allowed to complete its turn before any shift.

“We believe the South should be allowed to complete its tenure before any power shift,” Obilor said.

The AIYF also called for greater inclusivity in federal appointments, decrying what it described as the underrepresentation of the South East in national governance.

Obilor appealed to the President to engage directly with youth leaders and civil society groups, arguing that broader dialogue is essential to building unity and trust in Nigeria.

“We want to be heard. The aspirations of young people across the country should be taken seriously if our democracy is to be strengthened,” he concluded.
