Senate holds closed-door session to discuss possible removal of CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar
On Wednesday, November 20, the Nigerian Senate entered a closed-door session to discuss the removal of Justice Danladi Umar, the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). The session, which was presided over by Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio, followed a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele.
In the motion, Bamidele referred to Section 157(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), arguing that Justice Umar should be removed due to numerous petitions filed against him. He emphasized the need for the Senate to act in accordance with the Constitution, which allows for the removal of the CCT Chairman based on these petitions.
To ensure a smooth and orderly discussion, a source within the Senate told DAILY POST that a closed-door session was necessary to address sensitive matters before opening the debate to the public.
Under the Constitution, a two-thirds majority of the combined chambers of the National Assembly is required to remove the Chairman of the CCT. If the motion passes, it could lead to the appointment of Mr. Abdullahi Usman Bello as the new substantive Chairman, according to the motion seen by DAILY POST.
