See what Akwa Ibom’s governor is building to make the state Nigeria’s top tourist hotspot

On Monday, May 26, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State made a bold move that could totally change how people see the state — and it has everything to do with tourism, fun, and the future.

The governor officially kicked off the long-awaited reconstruction of the Ibom International Convention Centre and the 200-room Ibom Hotels in Uyo — two major projects that had been left abandoned for years. And according to him, this is just the beginning.

“We are gathered here this afternoon in our determined effort to position Akwa Ibom State as the tourism hub of Nigeria,” he said during the event.

In a press statement from the Government House shared on Sunday, May 25, Eno explained that these projects, along with the exciting new ARISE Resort, will be part of a big plan to boost tourism and create cool, must-visit destinations in the state.

On Monday, May 26, he shared more details about the ARISE Agenda — a big plan to grow the state in smart, sustainable ways. Tourism, he said, is a major part of that plan. And Akwa Ibom already has a lot going for it.

“With our ownership of Ibom Air, the ease of movement, our culinary excellence, and a united, hospitable people, Akwa Ibom stands at the cusp of tourism-driven growth,” Eno said.

One of the biggest highlights? The ARISE Resort. It’s being designed as a fun, family-friendly destination with a 9-hole golf course, artificial lakes, playgrounds, a banquet hall, and luxurious chalets.

The governor called it “a marvel of human imagination.”

He also said Uyo — the state capital — is already a favorite spot for conferences, seminars, and retreats. But once the hotel and convention center are completed, it will become a one-stop destination for both business and relaxation.

When asked why his government is focusing on finishing projects that had been abandoned for years, Governor Eno had a powerful answer.

“I came not just to deepen peace and unity in my state, but to deploy my finisher’s anointing—especially on projects that have already consumed billions. I believe God wanted us to complete these projects and align them with modern tourism standards,” he said.

He also gave credit to past leaders who helped start these projects, especially Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Lawmakers from the National Assembly, led by Senator Aniekan Bassey from Uyo, praised the governor’s focus and pledged to support him for a second term.

Also speaking at the event, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, said these projects will bring more jobs, attract tourists, and add real value to the state’s economy.

So yeah, if you haven’t been thinking of Akwa Ibom as a go-to travel destination yet… you might want to start.
