Security alert: US Embassy warns citizens to avoid military, govt facilities in Abuja

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert, advising American citizens to steer clear of Nigerian military and government facilities in Abuja due to heightened global security concerns.

In a statement released on Monday, June 23, the US Embassy said all embassy staff and their families are prohibited from visiting military sites or other government venues in the capital except for official duties.

The advisory also urged American citizens to stay vigilant in public places, particularly locations frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials.

“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time,” the Embassy said.

The advisory listed the following precautions:

  • Stay alert in public places

  • Avoid large gatherings

  • Limit unnecessary travel

  • Avoid predictable routines

  • Be familiar with emergency exits in buildings

  • Review personal security plans

Despite the alert, the Consular Sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open and operational.
