Suspected robbers kill IBBUL student, spark protest in Niger State

A 200-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), Niger State, has been killed by suspected armed robbers, sparking outrage and protests among students.

The victim, identified simply as Jafar, was reportedly attacked and stabbed in the neck around 3 a.m. on Monday at his off-campus residence in the Ndakitabu area of Lapai.

Eyewitnesses said residents raised an alarm after the attack, prompting a quick response from the police. However, the suspects had fled the scene before officers arrived. Jafar was rushed to the Lapai General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The tragic incident triggered a protest by students, who took to the streets and barricaded the Agaie-Lapai road to express their anger and demand justice. The protest was later brought under control by police operatives deployed to the area.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun. In a statement, Abiodun said, “Armed robbers attacked a student lodge in the Ndakitabu area around 3 a.m., stabbing a 200-level student, Jafar, in the neck. He was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead. The suspects fled before they could be apprehended.”

He added that tactical teams had been dispatched to restore order and that the Commissioner of Police had ordered a manhunt for the perpetrators.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed that the perpetrators of this heinous crime must be arrested and brought to book,” Abiodun stated.
